Beverly Parker is Professor of Music Emeritus at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. A graduate of Boston University and the University of Michigan, she was a member of the university staff for thirty-two years, for nine of which she served as Head of the Department / School of Music.
Professor Parker edited the accredited journal SAMUS (South African Journal of Musicology)between 1993 and 2005, Vol. 25 of which was dedicated to her and another musicologist by the Musicological Society of Southern Africa in recognition of their service to the musicological community. She has served as a consultant for various university departments, and she regularly serves as an external examiner for other universities and as a peer reviewer for scholarly journals and for the National Research Foundation.
Her research articles on Western classical music, adult music education, African music and South African music research have appeared in SAMUS, the International Review of the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music, the Musical Quarterly, College Music Symposium, the International Society for Music Education Yearbook, Swahili and the proceedings of various international conferences. She contributed a chapter to JWT Allen’s Tendi, and co-edited a catalogue of South African music theses completed during the years 1932 through 1999.
