Jürgen Bräuninger
is an Associate Professor at the School of Music, University of KwaZulu-Natal, lecturing mainly in composition and music technology. He studied in Stuttgart with Ulrich Süsse and Erhard Karkoschka and at San Jose State University with Allen Strange and Dan Wyman. Besides many works for various ensembles/soloists and electronic media (some in collaboration with Matthew Brubeck, Feya Faku, Reinhard Febel, Sazi Dlamini, Ulrich Süsse, and Dan Wyman as well as poet Ari Sitas), he has also contributed to film scores (e.g. The Lawnmower Man) and a number of Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre productions (e.g. A South African Siddhartha and Ahimsa-Ubuntu). His more recent composition ihlathi is available on Southern Cones: Music out of Africa and South America (Leonardo Music Journal CD Series Volume 10, distributed by www.cdemusic.org), Limes X plus One (dml records CD018, www.dml-records.de), and The Bow Project (www.tutl.com).

Deepak Ram
- Born in 1960, Deepak Ram began his first formal training in music (flute and tabla) under Jeram Bhana. At the age of 17 he made his first trip to India and later continued his studies in Bombay with world-renowned flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, voice and theory teacher Pandit Rajaram Shukla, and tabla player Shridar Padhye. Deepak Ram gave public performances as a teenager, becoming a full-time professional musician in 1984. In 1987 he performed with his teacher Pandit Chaurasia in Geneva, Switzerland. Initially influenced and helped by his musician brothers Rabindranath and Vevek, he developed with them an early interest in jazz and its improvisational nature. As a composer, Deepak Ram has written works ranging from choral music to signature tunes and also the score for Cinderella in India. In January 1992 he recorded two CDs in New Delhi which were released by Eternal Music Records, California. Deepak Ram lectured in the Department of Music at the University of Durban-Westville. Toine Scholtz
- Toine Scholtz received a BAHons (Music Technology) degree from the University of Natal in 1996. Since then he has been working as a free lance producer and composer, operating his own music technology business producing audio for multimedia and websites as well as radio and tv commercials. He is also a Deejay.
Ari Sitas
- Ari Sitas is Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Natal, Durban. Apart from industrial studies, he has been involved in creative work since the mid-1970s. As one of the founding members of the Junction Avenue Theatre company in Johannesburg he has been part of all its major productions such as the Fantastical History of a Useless Man, Randlords and Rotgut, Willl of a Rebel, Dikhitsheneng and Marabi. Since 1980 Ari Sitas has been involved in trade union activities and was an initiator of the worker theatre movement in South Africa. Following his move to Durban in 1983, Sitas has worked closely with the unions in the region and especially with COSATU. He has directed and facilitated many plays like Ilanga Lizophumela Abasebenzi, the Dunlop Play, Khoze Kuphe Nini?, Long March, and Bambatha’sChildren. He also edited the worker poetry book Black Mamba Rising and was instrumental in the formation of the Durban Workers’ Cultural Local, the Culture and Working Life Project, as well as the Congress of South African Writers. As a creative writer, Sitas has published poems (Tropical Scars and Songs, Shoeshine and Piano) the novellas William Zungu – A Xmas Story and Etopia, the play Charred Loving, the libretto of Dead Fish and Dreams of Love – Again and the book Slave Trades.
Ulrich Süße
- Ulrich Süße (born 1944) studied composition with Karkoschka, Stockhausen and Ligeti in Europe and in 1969 as a DAAD scholar in New York with Berio at Juilliard School of Music, and Wuorinen and Tanenbaum at Manhattan School of Music. From 1973 to 1976 he was lecturer for composition at the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa and responsible for the establishment of an electronic music studio. Since 1976 (1980 as professor) at Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Guest lecturer in the USA, Philippines, South Africa, Korea and Australia. Participation in festivals for (mainly) electroacoustic music in Varadero, Cuba (1985, 87, 89, 93, 98), Baltimore, USA (1988), Brno, CSFR (1991), Seoul (1993), Wrozlaw, Poland and Bourges, France (1994) and Montreal (1995). Guest conductor in Tainan, Taiwan (1985 and 88), lecturer at the Percussion Convention in Nashville (1989), artist in residence at Studio PASS in New York (1986), the Washington Project of the Arts (1990) and the Lee Strasberg Institute in Los Angeles (1993 and 1996). More than 80 compositions mainly using electronics, amongst them 10 collective compositions with Jürgen Bräuninger, David Mason, Matthias Schneider and Rainer Wehinger.
