The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music in partnership with the Centre for Creative Arts at UKZN, the UJ Arts & Culture and the South African Jazz Educators Association proudly presents “Songs of Freedom”

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the University of KwaZulu Natal’s jazz program and this sets the theme for our activities in April. The jazz program at the University of Natal, Durban(UND) was established in 1983 by Prof Darius Brubeck, the first formal tertiary-level jazz program on the African continent.

Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as “JAM”) is a global event held in April every month to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz – to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more.
