DESCRIPTION:Press release: \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents pianist\, composer\, producer and educator Andile Yenana as he celebrates the release of his new album\, WAY OUT IS IN on Wednesday 11 March at 17:30. \n\n\n\nAfter a 20-year hiatus\, South African jazz master Andile Yenana returns with WAY OUT IS IN\, a powerful live recording captured in Basel\, Switzerland at Bird’s Eye Jazz Club in June 2018. The album was recorded over three days in front of a live audience\, capturing the spontaneity and depth that define Yenana’s artistry. \n\n\n\nReflecting on the long wait between releases\, Yenana shares: \n\n\n\n“I needed time to strip away everything (that no longer aligned) — old relationships\, familiar places\, even certain versions of myself — to listen more deeply. In that quiet\, I began rediscovering what truly moves me musically and culturally. I went back to the Xhosa folk songs I grew up with — songs that shaped me — and through that process of letting go and returning\, I was able to reimagine these songs on the piano.” \n\n\n\nThis album is the result of a rich cultural exchange between Yenana and Swiss musicians. International collaboration is not new to him; at 26\, he participated in a music exchange programme with Norwegian musicians alongside his mentor\, Zim Ngqawana. Having previously experienced such cross-cultural partnerships\, Yenana had a strong sense of how this creative journey might unfold. \n\n\n\nWAY OUT IS IN represents a culmination of his musical quests — a reflection of everything he has learned and continues to learn. For Yenana\, learning is an ongoing\, lifelong process. \n\n\n\nThe project was inspired by cultural fellowship\, shared ideas\, environment\, and the freedom to articulate a personal story in a distinctive way. Presenting himself before audiences unfamiliar with his music in Switzerland and experiencing their warm reception further shaped the spirit of this recording. \n\n\n\nThe album invites listeners to venture into both familiar and unknown territories in search of their true selves. DESCRIPTION:For immediate release: The Songbook Sessions \n\n\n\nThe Songbook Sessions is ostensibly a Monday night jam session\, in two halves. The first half is a curated set featuring tunes selected by an invited band leader. The tunes are made available in advance\, with links to charts and audio\, and are ranked from beginner\, easy\, intermediate\, to advanced. The second half is an open jam session. \n\n\n\nThese sessions intend to bring together musicians from all walks\, other performance practitioners\, students and teachers\, and audiences that appreciate musical conversation and live music. It seeks to unearth new repertoires\, to interrogate the notion of ‘standards’\, to acknowledge our histories\, the multi-cultural society that we live in\, and to be more inclusive of mastery that exists on the periphery of our communal practice. \n\n\n\nThe Songbook Sessions are on Mondays from 6-8pm at the UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music. This follows from his various projects seeking to align sounds with context(s). Makhathini believes that sounds possess ‘spiritual significance’. DESCRIPTION:Press release: \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents Kozo Zwane for the March edition of Twosday\, Tuesday 24 March 2026 at 17:30. \n\n\n\nOriginally from Johannesburg\, Kozo Zwane is a practicing musician who explores a variety of genres. He is heavily influenced by folk writing\, South African Jazz and AmaZioni. His music is grounded by and in prayer – structured around vocal layering and guitar\, his performances generally involve choral work from vocal ensemble Buyambo.  2024 saw him take on more solo shows\, and he finally makes his debut at the UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music. \n\n\n\nHis love for sonic experimentation has led him to the scoring of internationally acclaimed films\, as well as the creation of soundtracks for a show at SA Fashion Week 2022 as well as live theatre production ‘Of Loss’ by TheatreDuo. He started 2024 with a performance at a gift of the givers fundraiser\, opening for Alice Phoebe Lou at the Baxter theatre. DESCRIPTION:Press release \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents The Jazzy Shandu Ensemble (JSE) on Wednesday 25 March 2026 at 17:30. \n\n\n\nThe Jazzy Shandu Ensemble (JSE) perform mainly compositions by Derrick “Simpi” Mbatha\, who informally learnt music from Hugh Masekela and Victor Ntoni whom he met in New York\, the United States\, in the 1980s. Assisted by guitarist Bheki Khoza and bassist Jimmy Mngwandi\, Mbatha produced a CD of his music with voices a couple of years ago. \n\n\n\nCurrently he is leading The Jazzy Shandu Ensemble (JSE)\, with Samkelo “Njinji’ Magwaza on keyboard\, Thuto Motsemme on double bass\, Nhlanhla Moletsane on trumpet\, Phathokuhle Khathi on trombone and Manelisi Khumalo on tenor saxophone\, and Mbatha on drums. The ensemble instrumentally performs this uniquely South African kind of jazz.
