DESCRIPTION:THE SONGBOOK SESSIONS FEATURING SUSAN BARRY \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents The Songbook Sessions\, led by renowned pianist\, composer\, educator\, and eThekwini Living Legend Susan Barry\, on Monday\, 8 June 2026 at 18:00. \n\n\n\nA former lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal\, Susan Barry has made an indelible contribution to South African jazz as both a performer and educator. Over a distinguished career spanning several decades\, she has worked alongside some of the country’s most celebrated musicians\, most notably the iconic Busi Mhlongo. \n\n\n\nBarry co-founded the influential jazz ensemble Vukani and later collaborated closely with Mhlongo for more than 25 years. Together\, they toured extensively\, recorded acclaimed works\, and performed as part of the band Twasa until Mhlongo’s passing in 2010. \n\n\n\nRecognised as an eThekwini Living Legend for her outstanding contributions to music and education\, Barry has also been involved in numerous cross-cultural projects and collaborations with artists from across Southern Africa\, including Mozambique. Her influence extends beyond the stage\, having mentored and inspired generations of South African jazz musicians through her teaching and artistic leadership. \n\n\n\nThe Songbook Sessions has provided a vibrant platform for collaboration\, learning\, and musical exploration. Bringing together audiences and musicians through shared repertoire and live performance. This special edition promises an evening of exceptional musicianship\, insightful interpretation\, and musical storytelling led by one of Durban’s most respected jazz figures. \n\n\n\nThis performance marks the 20th and final edition of The Songbook Sessions – Monday Night Jam Session series for the current season. The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music extends its sincere gratitude to Concerts SA and its partners for their invaluable support in making this series possible. The legendary Louis Mhlanga is bringing his incredible artistry and rich musical traditions to the coast this July. Don’t miss this powerful evening celebrating heritage\, connection\, and exceptional live performance. \n\n\n\nLouis Mhlanga is a South Africa-based guitarist from Zimbabwe. He started playing the guitar at the age of 10\, imitating the likes of Jimi Hendrix\, The Beatles\, The Rolling Stones\, Led Zeppelin\, Deep Purple and other rock stars from the 60s and 70s. He also studied both Southern and West African guitar traditions\, and successfully incorporated the traditional mbira (thumb piano) patterns of the Shona people into his unique modern electric guitar style. \n\n\n\nMhlanga is known for his collaborations as much as his solo work. He features on the 1996 collaborative album ‘Place of Hope’ alongside international stars like George Duke\, James Ingram and Al Jarreau. He can also be heard on Andy Narell’s ‘Fire in the Engine Room’ (2000) and ‘Live in South Africa’ (2001). In 1999 he recorded ‘Live At The Bassline’ with Vusi Mahlasela. Musik Ye Afrika\, another collaborative band\, is the brainchild of Louis and his long-time friend\, bassist Jimi Indi. They recorded their first album in 1997\, following it in mid-2003 with ‘United We Stand’\, featuring stars like Oliver Mtukudzi\, Busi Mhlongo\, Chiwoniso Maraire\, Marcus Wyatt\, Bushy Seatlholo and Sydney Mnisi. ‘Keeping the Dream’ (2004) was another collaborative album\, this time with Dutch bassist Eric van der Westen\, also featuring Senegal’s Habib Koite. \n\n\n\nMhlanga’s first solo album\, ‘Mukai’ (2000) received high acclaim and further established him in the South African market. The Louis Mhlanga Band came into being in 2001\, featuring formidable South Africa jazz heavyweights Andile Yenana (keys)\, Denis Lalouette (bass)\, Sello Montwedi (drums) and Basi Mahlasela (percussion). They were invited by SAFM to perform a recorded concert during the 2001 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown\, resulting in the release of ‘Shamwari’\, Mhlanga’s first album on the Sheer Sound Label. The SAMA-nominated follow-up in 2004\, ‘Tinganekwane’ (Stories)\, showcased Louis’ signature style\, revisiting traditional Zimbabwe flavours interspersed with some surprises. \n\n\n\n​The master guitarist and vocalist will be sharing the stage with a phenomenal lineup of musicians: \n\n\n\nBasi Mahlasela – Perc/Vocals \n\n\n\nMichael Phillips – Bass/Vocals \n\n\n\nRandal Skippers – Keyboards \n\n\n\nRob Watson – Drums \n\n\n\n“My music embodies a unique blend of primitive intensity and sophisticated nuance\, combining rugged energy with refined sensibilities.
