DESCRIPTION:Press release: \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) proudly presents Bantu’s Clef on Wednesday 20 May 2026 at 17:30. \n\n\n\nConsisting of Milton Chissano (Guitar); Leon Scharnick (Alto and Tenor saxes); Doctor Vezi (Electric bass guitar); Albert Chemane (Drums); featuring Zoe the Seed (vocals)\, Bantu’s Clef’s music is characterized as instrumental World Music with strong influences of African rhythms from the Bantu people. It interlocks with various others musical influences such as African ethnic music\, American jazz\, Latin American music as well as aspirations from Baroque music and other genres of music. \n\n\n\nBantu’s Clef sound is presented in a language or aesthetic located within the expression of contemporary jazz. It includes interpretations of other composers from Mozambique\, South Africa\, Latin America and Bollywood music. DESCRIPTION:A VOCAL MASTERCLASS BY DR LISA ENGELBRECHT\, VOCAL COACH AND RÉPÉTITEUR AT OPERA UCT\, SATURDAY 30 MAY FROM 10H00-13H00 AND CONCERT AT HOWARD COLLEGE THEATRE 15H00 – 16H30\, FEATURING THE AWARD-WINNING SOUTH AFRICAN BARITONE SANDILE ZITHA \n\n\n\nA Vocal Masterclass will be presented by Dr Lisa Engelbrecht\, Vocal Coach and Répétiteur at Opera UCT\, on Saturday 30th May from 10h00-13h00 in the Howard College Theatre. Six senior students from the UKZN Opera Studio and Choral Academy (OSCA)\, have been selected to participate in the Masterclass. We encourage students and the larger Durban public to attend the Masterclass since Dr Engelbrecht is highly regarded as an international Vocal Coach and Répétiteur.  Entrance is free of charge. \n\n\n\nThis will be followed by a Concert in the Howard College Theatre from 15h00 – 16h30\, featuring the award-winning South African baritone Sandile Zitha from the SA College of Music at the University of Cape Town\, accompanied on the piano by Dr Lisa Engelbrecht.  In addition to their exciting and varied programme\, including Zitha performing the  Pearl Fishers’ duet by Georges Bizet with our very own tenor Nonkanyiso Khumalo\, the OSCA Ensemble under the direction of Lionel Mkhwanazi\, the Head of OSCA and accompanied by Senzekile Biyela\, will perform excerpts from Carmen by Georges Bizet. Tickets are available at the door from 14h30 at R50 per adult and R20 for pensioners. UKZN students will be allowed free entrance.  A gem of a concert not to be missed!

A graduate of the University of KwaZulu-Natal\, he has collaborated with some of South Africa’s biggest music names\, including Prince Kaybee\, Distruction Boyz\, Zakes Bantwini\, Kabza De Small\, and Dlala Thukzin. Over a distinguished career spanning several decades\, she has worked alongside some of the country’s most celebrated musicians\, most notably the iconic Busi Mhlongo. \n\n\n\nBarry co-founded the influential jazz ensemble Vukani and later collaborated closely with Mhlongo for more than 25 years. Together\, they toured extensively\, recorded acclaimed works\, and performed as part of the band Twasa until Mhlongo’s passing in 2010. \n\n\n\nRecognised as an eThekwini Living Legend for her outstanding contributions to music and education\, Barry has also been involved in numerous cross-cultural projects and collaborations with artists from across Southern Africa\, including Mozambique. Her influence extends beyond the stage\, having mentored and inspired generations of South African jazz musicians through her teaching and artistic leadership. \n\n\n\nThe Songbook Sessions has provided a vibrant platform for collaboration\, learning\, and musical exploration. Bringing together audiences and musicians through shared repertoire and live performance. This special edition promises an evening of exceptional musicianship\, insightful interpretation\, and musical storytelling led by one of Durban’s most respected jazz figures. \n\n\n\nThis performance marks the 20th and final edition of The Songbook Sessions – Monday Night Jam Session series for the current season.
