SUMMARY:SAJE hosts its 16th Conference\, exploring Indigenous Musical Elements in South African Jazz
DESCRIPTION:SAJE hosts its 16th Conference\, exploring Indigenous Musical Elements in South African Jazz \n\n\n\nThe South African Association for Jazz Education (SAJE) will host its 16th SAJE Conference from 25–27 February 2026 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) in Durban\, under the theme: “Indigenous Musical Elements in South African Jazz: Exploring Theory and Practice.” \n\n\n\nThe 2026 conference will be presented both in-person and virtually\, widening access for participants across South Africa and beyond. \n\n\n\nAcross three days of research paper presentations\, masterclasses\, workshops\, panel discussions and concerts\, the programme moves deliberately between theory and practice\, asking how indigenous musical knowledge lives inside South African jazz not only as “influence”\, but as structure\, language\, technique and philosophy. \n\n\n\n“As we step into this new term of SAJE\, we do so with the rich musical heritage of our communities as our foundation\,” said Dr Sibusiso Mashiloane\, SAJE President. “This year’s theme places indigenous musical knowledge at the centre\, asking not only what we play\, but how we credit\, teach\, transmit and evolve the sound responsibly across classrooms\, stages and archives.” he adds. \n\n\n\nThe conference will open with a concert by Cape Jazz/Goema pioneer Hilton Schilder\, a multi-instrumentalist long associated with shaping the sound-world of Cape jazz. \n\n\n\nThe host venue\, UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM)\, is known for convening learning\, dialogue and live performance\, and for building partnerships that strengthen jazz education and public culture. \n\n\n\nThe conference closes with a live set at The Chairman\, with a bill that brings together three powerful voices in South African jazz: Sbonelo Mlita\, a bassist\, composer and bandleader whose work moves between Afro-jazz and Afrobeat; Lu Dlamini\, a Durban-based vocalist\, composer and traditional instrumentalist known for storytelling through song and deep KZN lineage; and Buddy Wells\, a Cape Town-based saxophonist\, composer and arranger who has performed and recorded widely with major South African and international artists. The closing concert echoes the conference’s core questions\, how indigenous musical knowledge\, language\, and memory sit inside jazz practice. \n\n\n\nSAJE’s conference series has helped shape jazz education and scholarship in South Africa for decades\, convening educators\, artists and researchers around major questions of practice\, pedagogy\, heritage and innovation. \n\n\n\nAbout SAJE \n\n\n\nThe South African Association for Jazz Education advances jazz education\, research\, skills development\, performance\, audience development\, and the documentation and preservation of South African jazz heritage. \n\n\n\nThe 16th SAJE Conference is made possible through the support of the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC)and eThekwini Municipality. SUMMARY:WAY OUT IS IN by Andile Yenana live at Jazzcentre
DESCRIPTION:Press release: \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents pianist\, composer\, producer and educator Andile Yenana as he celebrates the release of his new album\, WAY OUT IS IN on Wednesday 11 March at 17:30. \n\n\n\nAfter a 20-year hiatus\, South African jazz master Andile Yenana returns with WAY OUT IS IN\, a powerful live recording captured in Basel\, Switzerland at Bird’s Eye Jazz Club in June 2018. The album was recorded over three days in front of a live audience\, capturing the spontaneity and depth that define Yenana’s artistry. \n\n\n\nReflecting on the long wait between releases\, Yenana shares: \n\n\n\n“I needed time to strip away everything (that no longer aligned) — old relationships\, familiar places\, even certain versions of myself — to listen more deeply. In that quiet\, I began rediscovering what truly moves me musically and culturally. I went back to the Xhosa folk songs I grew up with — songs that shaped me — and through that process of letting go and returning\, I was able to reimagine these songs on the piano.” \n\n\n\nThis album is the result of a rich cultural exchange between Yenana and Swiss musicians. International collaboration is not new to him; at 26\, he participated in a music exchange programme with Norwegian musicians alongside his mentor\, Zim Ngqawana. Having previously experienced such cross-cultural partnerships\, Yenana had a strong sense of how this creative journey might unfold. \n\n\n\nWAY OUT IS IN represents a culmination of his musical quests — a reflection of everything he has learned and continues to learn. For Yenana\, learning is an ongoing\, lifelong process. \n\n\n\nThe project was inspired by cultural fellowship\, shared ideas\, environment\, and the freedom to articulate a personal story in a distinctive way. Presenting himself before audiences unfamiliar with his music in Switzerland and experiencing their warm reception further shaped the spirit of this recording. \n\n\n\nThe album invites listeners to venture into both familiar and unknown territories in search of their true selves. It also aims to offer a sense of resolution and introspection to all who engage with it. \n\n\n\nWAY OUT IS IN was officially released on 24 October 2025 and is available on all digital platforms. \n\n\n\n\nEvent Details \n\n\n\nDate: Wednesday\, 11 March 2026Doors Open: 17:00Music Starts: 17:30Venue: University of KwaZulu-Natal – Howard College CampusDennis Shepstone Building\, Level 2Centre for Jazz and Popular Music \n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of profound musical storytelling and celebration of a master artist’s long-awaited return. \n\n\n\nTickets available online or cash at the door: https://fixr.co/event/andile-yenana-way-out-is-in-album-launch-tickets-294113731?region=za \n\n\n\n\nFor further information or to arrange an interview\, please contact: \n\n\n\nUnathi Magaqa \n\n\n\nE-mail: blackmilkproductions@gmail.com \n\n\n\nMobile: 071 637 2681

DESCRIPTION:Press release: \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents Nduduzo Makhathini Sacred Concerts featuring Linda Sikhakhane on Wednesday 18 March 2026 at 17:30. \n\n\n\nSacred Concerts is a new ‘sound strategy’ that Improvisor and scholar Nduduzo Makhathini is embarking on. This follows from his various projects seeking to align sounds with context(s). Makhathini believes that sounds possess ‘spiritual significance’. As such\, this concert is focused on various types of ‘sacred’ music that stems out of indigenous cultural (and religious) systems that influence Makhathini’s musicality. \n\n\n\nFor the inauguration he invites his collaborator and saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane to explore what ‘sacredness’ might look and sound like when approached from an improvisation standpoint and with some ‘jazz’ sensibility. \n\n\n\nDr Nduduzo Makhathini: \n\n\n\nSince making his international debut for Blue Note in 2020 with Modes of Communication: Letters From the Underworlds\, the South African pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini has earned widespread acclaim for the genuinely spiritual transcendence of his music. \n\n\n\nHis music explores themes of African spirituality\, colonial history\, cultural identity\, and healing\, while promoting hope\, balance\, and freedom for humanity. \n\n\n\n\nEvent details \n\n\n\nNduduzo Makhathini Sacred Concerts feat Linda Sikhakhane \n\n\n\nWednesday 18 March 2026 \n\n\n\nDoors Open: 17:30 \n\n\n\nTime: 18:00 – 20:00 \n\n\n\nVenue: Centre for Jazz and Popular Music\, UKZN \n\n\n\nHoward College Campus\, Dennis Shepstone Building\, Level 2\, Durban \n\n\n\nTickets at webtickets https://www.webtickets.co.za/v2/event.aspx?itemid=1590292149 \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nR130 (General Admission) R100 (Pensioners) R70 (Students with valid student card) Or cash at the door if not sold out
