SUMMARY:SAJE hosts its 16th Conference\, exploring Indigenous Musical Elements in South African Jazz
DESCRIPTION:SAJE hosts its 16th Conference\, exploring Indigenous Musical Elements in South African Jazz \n\n\n\nThe South African Association for Jazz Education (SAJE) will host its 16th SAJE Conference from 25–27 February 2026 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) in Durban\, under the theme: “Indigenous Musical Elements in South African Jazz: Exploring Theory and Practice.” \n\n\n\nThe 2026 conference will be presented both in-person and virtually\, widening access for participants across South Africa and beyond. \n\n\n\nAcross three days of research paper presentations\, masterclasses\, workshops\, panel discussions and concerts\, the programme moves deliberately between theory and practice\, asking how indigenous musical knowledge lives inside South African jazz not only as “influence”\, but as structure\, language\, technique and philosophy. \n\n\n\n“As we step into this new term of SAJE\, we do so with the rich musical heritage of our communities as our foundation\,” said Dr Sibusiso Mashiloane\, SAJE President. “This year’s theme places indigenous musical knowledge at the centre\, asking not only what we play\, but how we credit\, teach\, transmit and evolve the sound responsibly across classrooms\, stages and archives.” he adds. \n\n\n\nThe conference will open with a concert by Cape Jazz/Goema pioneer Hilton Schilder\, a multi-instrumentalist long associated with shaping the sound-world of Cape jazz. \n\n\n\nThe host venue\, UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM)\, is known for convening learning\, dialogue and live performance\, and for building partnerships that strengthen jazz education and public culture. \n\n\n\nThe conference closes with a live set at The Chairman\, with a bill that brings together three powerful voices in South African jazz: Sbonelo Mlita\, a bassist\, composer and bandleader whose work moves between Afro-jazz and Afrobeat; Lu Dlamini\, a Durban-based vocalist\, composer and traditional instrumentalist known for storytelling through song and deep KZN lineage; and Buddy Wells\, a Cape Town-based saxophonist\, composer and arranger who has performed and recorded widely with major South African and international artists. The closing concert echoes the conference’s core questions\, how indigenous musical knowledge\, language\, and memory sit inside jazz practice. \n\n\n\nSAJE’s conference series has helped shape jazz education and scholarship in South Africa for decades\, convening educators\, artists and researchers around major questions of practice\, pedagogy\, heritage and innovation. \n\n\n\nAbout SAJE \n\n\n\nThe South African Association for Jazz Education advances jazz education\, research\, skills development\, performance\, audience development\, and the documentation and preservation of South African jazz heritage. \n\n\n\nThe 16th SAJE Conference is made possible through the support of the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC)and eThekwini Municipality. As host\, the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) provides a vital home for jazz education and the city’s live music life\, offering space and infrastructure for workshops\, rehearsals\, performances\, and conferences that connect students\, professionals\, and the wider public. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect: highlights from the programme \n\n\n\nOpening Night: Wednesday\, 25 February: Sounding the Source \n\n\n\nThe conference opens with a feature performance by Hilton Schilder and a cocktail reception for delegates\, artists and partners to connect. \n\n\n\nDay 1: Thursday\, 26 February \n\n\n\nA strong focus on Cape jazz / goema and Zulu musical elements in jazz practice\, including: \n\n\n\n\nResearch session: From Big Band to Ghoema: Reframing Cape Jazz in South African Jazz\n\n\n\nMasterclass: Hilton Schilder: Cape Jazz\, Goema Feel & Creative Methods\n\n\n\nMasterclass: Bheki Khoza: Zulu Musical Elements\, Indigenous Guitar Language & SA Jazz Practice\n\n\n\nPanels examining groove\, phrasing\, tonalities\, language\, and the ethics of “translation” from community sound to stage sounds.\n\n\n\n\nDay 2: Friday\, 27 February \n\n\n\nA day that foregrounds archives\, language\, ceremonial practice\, and documentation\, including: \n\n\n\n\nResearch session: Tracing Indigenous Knowledge in South African Jazz\n\n\n\nMasterclass: Buddy Wells: Saxophone Language\, Lineage & Xhosa Sound\n\n\n\nPanel: Xhosa Songcraft in South African Jazz (with selected online contributors)\n\n\n\nOnline talk: George Werner: Documenting South African Jazz\n\n\n\nGuest talk: Prof Martin Zenker (IASJ): Internationalisation\n\n\n\nClosing Concert at The Chairman featuring Sibonelo Mlita\, Lu Dlamini & Buddy Wells\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nEvent listing \n\n\n\nEvent: 16th SAJE Conference 2026 \n\n\n\nDates: 25–27 February 2026 \n\n\n\nTheme: Indigenous Musical Elements in South African Jazz: Exploring Theory and Practice \n\n\n\nFormat: Hybrid (In-person and Virtual) \n\n\n\nMain Venue: University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) – Howard College Campus \n\n\n\nCentre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) \n\n\n\nDennis Shepstone Building\, Level 2 \n\n\n\nMazisi Kunene Road\, Glenwood \n\n\n\nDurban\, 4041\, South Africa \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration / Ticket Link: https://forms.gle/MzzcKn3b3TBaT9bh6 \n\n\n\nFull Programme Link: To be confirmed (full programme will be shared soon). \n\n\n\nClosing Concert Venue Details \n\n\n\nThe Chairman \n\n\n\n146 Mahatma Gandhi Road \n\n\n\nDurban\, 4001\, South Africa \n\n\n\nTime: 19:00 – 21:00 \n\n\n\nThe closing concert will feature Sibonelo Mlita\, Lu Dlamini and Buddy Wells.

SUMMARY:Prelude to CTIJF : Sibusiso Mashiloane’s Mash Trio Live at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (UKZN)
DESCRIPTION:In the lead up to his performance at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in March\, pianist and composer Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane returns to the stage with his long-time collaborators DalisuNdlazi (bass) and Riley Giandhari (drums) for a performance as the Mash Trio at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music\, UKZN on 18 February 2026. \n\n\n\nRooted in rich African sonic traditions and guided by the trio’s musical connection\, Mash Trio’s live set moves between soulfulness\, groove\, and improvisation. The evening will draw from Mashiloane’s most loved compositions spanning 2016 to 2025\, alongside spontaneous moments that can only happen in real time. All shaped by home\, memory\, and the quiet power of shared experience. \n\n\n\n“Our chemistry is the kind that can’t be manufactured. It’s built over years of listening\, really listening\, to each other. Expect special guests\, surprises\, and a sound experience that celebrates the heartbeat of the people.” says Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane. He adds: “If you’ve seen Mash Trio before\, you already know: we aim to leave people with a feeling they can’t quite name\, but they’d want it again.” \n\n\n\nAt the centre of Mash Trio is Dr Sibusiso Mashiloane\, a pianist\, composer and UKZN Academic\, whose work bridges scholarship and performance. Mashilaone is a senior lecturer at UKZN who holds a PhD in Music with research that explores South African Jazz identity and the cultural “sound of home” that shapes contemporary expression. \n\n\n\nMashiloane is joined by two of South Africa’s most in-demand collaborators: bassist Dalisu Ndlazi\,whose tone and musical sensitivity have made him a trusted anchor across contemporary jazz stages. Ndlazi’s musical foundations were shaped in Umlazi\, where his journey began at the Siyakhula Community Development Centre. He was selected as National Schools Big Band bassist at the Standard Bank Youth Jazz Festival (2012)\, later serving as national youth band bassist from 2015\, and in 2019 attended the Louis Armstrong Summer Camp in New Orleans – a milestone that reflects his rising profile on the South African jazz circuit. \n\n\n\nRiley Giandhari (Riley G) is a Durban-based drummer\, composer and producer who began playing at age three\, inspired by his father\, drummer Pravin Giandhari. He studied jazz at UKZN and holds a Master’s in Music (Summa Cum Laude)\, alongside accolades including two SAMRO Overseas Scholarship awards (2018)and Mzansi Jazz Awards nominations (2020)for his artistry and debut album. \n\n\n\nAs the CTIJF sheds light on artists in their hometowns with activations through Durban and Johannesburg\, this event is set to be a powerful prelude to the beloved festival. \n\n\n\nEvent Details \n\n\n\nEvent: Sibusiso Mashiloane – Mash Trio LiveDate: 18 February 2026Time: 17:30Venue: Centre for Jazz and Popular Music\, UKZN (Durban) \n\n\n\nUniversity of Kwa-Zulu Natal\, Howard College Campus\, Dennis Shepstone Building\, Level 2Tickets: R70 – R130Bookings: Via Webtickets: https://www.webtickets.co.za/v2/event.aspx?itemid=1586170476 \n\n\n\nPics by Simanga Konstant Zondo
