The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents Elcides Carlos (MOZ) live in concert on Wednesday, 25 October 2023 at 17:30.

Elcides Carlos was born in Maputo (Mozambique) to a musical family. His late father was a music lover and vinyl record collector. He grew up listening to the likes of James Brown, Martinho da Vila, Manu Dibango, Steve Kekana, and Fany Mpfumo, among others.

All over these years, Elcides Carlos performed in several music festivals, notably “Umoja – cultural Flying carpet” (Zimbabwe and Norway), “International sisters Cities Youth Music Festival” (Shangdu – China), “Mozambique International Jazz Festival”, “Moments of Jazz”, “Festival Nacional da Cultura”, “Azgo Festival”, “Mozambique-Italy Jazz Festival”, “Baía Azul-Benguela Jazz Festival (Angola)”, “Lubango Jazz Festival” (Angola), Jazz no Franco, among others. He has worked and shared his music with artists like Hugh Masekela, Oliver Mutukudzi, Jonathan Butler, Jimmy Dludlu, and Moreira Chonguiça, to name a few.

His debut album, “Sense of Presence”, was released in 2022 and featured International artists like Ernie Smith (RSA), Ettiene Stadwijck (USA), Drew Zaremba (USA), Rosario Giuliani (Italy), Valentina Bartoli (Italy), Piero Borri (Italy), to name a few. He is a music educator who has taught African guitar at Escola de Comunicação e Artes – Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (School of Communication and Arts at Eduardo Mondlane’s University) since 2010.

Alongside his music career, Elcides Carlos runs a music agency, “Bookings & Bandas” (www.bookingsbandas.com) and a YouTube channel “Talking Jazz”, where he approaches many topics about jazz.

In the evening, Elcides Carlos will be on guitar and vocals. He will be joined by Tony Paco on drums, Lelas Mavie on bass, Sarmento de Cristo on saxophone and Shemual Mahabeer on the keys.
