Drummers unite to raise funds for Operation Bobbi Bear

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (UKZN) and iSupport Creative Business, supported by Concerts SA, are proud to present the Drum showcase, which is a virtual concert aimed to help to raise funds for Operation Bobbi Bear. The online concert will take place as part of the regular Unlocked Music Sessions on Wednesday 16 December 2020. There will be no cover charge; patrons can donate directly to Operation Bobbi Bear.

The drummers that have risen to the opportunity to contribute their skills to this fundraiser are many well-loved drummers, under which Riley Giandhari ‘Riley G’  who’s debut album “ A Groove For The Nation’’ was released in December 2019.  Newcastle-born Sivumintando Mdamba who studied music at UKZN  Howard College.  Drummer of 5th Season band Devon Hore, drummer of Heels Over Head Rebekah Doty and Habit To drummer Dale Wardell are joined by Pretoria based drummer Portia Sithole fondly known as Porsh_TheDrummer. Also joining the line-up are percussionists Richard Ellis, who is the facilitator of the first communal drumming collective in Durban and Nishalin Pillay, who will feature South African guitarist, singer/ songwriter Dave Starke. Completing this fantastic line up is session musician Dillan Kanny who has worked on numerous theatre shows such as Dolphins by starlight.

Bobbi Bear aims to collaborate with and assist the criminal justice system in ensuring the rights and safety of the child victim of sexual abuse.  The organization assesses the HIV/AIDS risk of a child victim of sexual abuse at point-of-rescue, to intervene and to counsel appropriately. They apply therapeutic methods with the use of a teddy bear named Bobbi Bear, to obtain forensic facts and evidence to assist the criminal justice process, within the best interests of the child. Part of their aim is to empower and train local communities to collaborate with the criminal justice system. This training ensures the rights and safety of children. Bobbie Bear also assigns and trains Child Safety Officers locally, as prototypes for national expansion, and possible inclusion into the criminal justice system.

Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian live music development project housed under the auspices of SAMRO and managed by IKS Cultural Consulting. Concerts SA receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SAMRO and the SAMRO Foundation. Working with musicians, promoters, venue owners and audiences, and providing support to the sector through research and skills development for music professionals, the project aims to build a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa. It also seeks to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.
