DESCRIPTION:Theme: Mhlazane Ngihambel’indlw’emnyama (The day I paid the Black community a visit): The Musical \n\n\n\nUKZN School of Arts\, African Music Project is once again exhilarated to showcase the African Music and Dance (AMD) ensembles in action. This semester’s edition is a musical chronicle of the African Indigenous people’s beliefs\, superstitions and the functionality of their music within daily lives. The repertoire features Amahubo songs\, Maskandi and story-telling\, as well as African dance. The performance skills ensembles are directed by Mr. Mfundiseni Ndwalane (Amahubo ensemble) and Ms. Nozuko Nguqu (Maskandi andIndigenous African Music composition ensembles) featuring Ingoma ensemble by Mr. Thabiso Zondo and Maskandi guitar by Mr. Matshitshi Ngema. \n\n\n\nFor our new audience this will be an introduction\, while it will be a nostalgic moment for those who have been following indigenous African musicians’ performance livelihoods. DESCRIPTION:Press release: \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) proudly presents Bantu’s Clef on Wednesday 20 May 2026 at 17:30. \n\n\n\nConsisting of Milton Chissano (Guitar); Leon Scharnick (Alto and Tenor saxes); Doctor Vezi (Electric bass guitar); Albert Chemane (Drums); featuring Zoe the Seed (vocals)\, Bantu’s Clef’s music is characterized as instrumental World Music with strong influences of African rhythms from the Bantu people. It interlocks with various others musical influences such as African ethnic music\, American jazz\, Latin American music as well as aspirations from Baroque music and other genres of music. \n\n\n\nBantu’s Clef sound is presented in a language or aesthetic located within the expression of contemporary jazz. It includes interpretations of other composers from Mozambique\, South Africa\, Latin America and Bollywood music. Bantu’s Clef proposes a night of melo-rhythmic music that appeals for both dancing and listening with harmonic structures that travel from basic to complex\, vesting the melodies with a lyrical aesthetic inspired in African chants in dialogue with the universe. \n\n\n\nLike jazz it also includes improvisation on the form\, the musicians have the freedom to express what is in their souls. \n\n\n\n\nEvent details \n\n\n\nBantu’s Clef \n\n\n\nWednesday 20 May 2026 \n\n\n\nDoors open at 17:00 \n\n\n\nMusic at 17:30 \n\n\n\nUKZN\, Howard College Campus. A graduate of the University of KwaZulu-Natal\, he has collaborated with some of South Africa’s biggest music names\, including Prince Kaybee\, Distruction Boyz\, Zakes Bantwini\, Kabza De Small\, and Dlala Thukzin. DESCRIPTION:THE SONGBOOK SESSIONS FEATURING SUSAN BARRY \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents The Songbook Sessions\, led by renowned pianist\, composer\, educator\, and eThekwini Living Legend Susan Barry\, on Monday\, 8 June 2026 at 18:00. \n\n\n\nA former lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal\, Susan Barry has made an indelible contribution to South African jazz as both a performer and educator. Over a distinguished career spanning several decades\, she has worked alongside some of the country’s most celebrated musicians\, most notably the iconic Busi Mhlongo. \n\n\n\nBarry co-founded the influential jazz ensemble Vukani and later collaborated closely with Mhlongo for more than 25 years. Together\, they toured extensively\, recorded acclaimed works\, and performed as part of the band Twasa until Mhlongo’s passing in 2010. \n\n\n\nRecognised as an eThekwini Living Legend for her outstanding contributions to music and education\, Barry has also been involved in numerous cross-cultural projects and collaborations with artists from across Southern Africa\, including Mozambique. Her influence extends beyond the stage\, having mentored and inspired generations of South African jazz musicians through her teaching and artistic leadership. \n\n\n\nThe Songbook Sessions has provided a vibrant platform for collaboration\, learning\, and musical exploration. Bringing together audiences and musicians through shared repertoire and live performance. This special edition promises an evening of exceptional musicianship\, insightful interpretation\, and musical storytelling led by one of Durban’s most respected jazz figures. \n\n\n\nThis performance marks the 20th and final edition of The Songbook Sessions – Monday Night Jam Session series for the current season. The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music extends its sincere gratitude to Concerts SA and its partners for their invaluable support in making this series possible.
