The theme therefore of our Jazz Appreciation Month(JAM) celebration in April is Miles and Trane @100 : the impact of Miles Davis and John Coltrane on SA jazz and culture. Consequently\, our regular Wednesday night concert program at CJPM will pay homage to these two jazz giants with a sequence of four themed concerts in April: \n\n\n\nMiles meets Mzansi \n\n\n\nThe spirit of innovation and futurism of Miles Davis meets the imagination of young South African musicians. DESCRIPTION:Theme: Mhlazane Ngihambel’indlw’emnyama (The day I paid the Black community a visit): The Musical \n\n\n\nUKZN School of Arts\, African Music Project is once again exhilarated to showcase the African Music and Dance (AMD) ensembles in action. This semester’s edition is a musical chronicle of the African Indigenous people’s beliefs\, superstitions and the functionality of their music within daily lives. The repertoire features Amahubo songs\, Maskandi and story-telling\, as well as African dance. The performance skills ensembles are directed by Mr. Mfundiseni Ndwalane (Amahubo ensemble) and Ms. Nozuko Nguqu (Maskandi andIndigenous African Music composition ensembles) featuring Ingoma ensemble by Mr. Thabiso Zondo and Maskandi guitar by Mr. Matshitshi Ngema. \n\n\n\nFor our new audience this will be an introduction\, while it will be a nostalgic moment for those who have been following indigenous African musicians’ performance livelihoods. DESCRIPTION:Press release: \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) proudly presents Bantu’s Clef on Wednesday 20 May 2026 at 17:30. \n\n\n\nConsisting of Milton Chissano (Guitar); Leon Scharnick (Alto and Tenor saxes); Doctor Vezi (Electric bass guitar); Albert Chemane (Drums); featuring Zoe the Seed (vocals)\, Bantu’s Clef’s music is characterized as instrumental World Music with strong influences of African rhythms from the Bantu people. It interlocks with various others musical influences such as African ethnic music\, American jazz\, Latin American music as well as aspirations from Baroque music and other genres of music. \n\n\n\nBantu’s Clef sound is presented in a language or aesthetic located within the expression of contemporary jazz. It includes interpretations of other composers from Mozambique\, South Africa\, Latin America and Bollywood music. Bantu’s Clef proposes a night of melo-rhythmic music that appeals for both dancing and listening with harmonic structures that travel from basic to complex\, vesting the melodies with a lyrical aesthetic inspired in African chants in dialogue with the universe. \n\n\n\nLike jazz it also includes improvisation on the form\, the musicians have the freedom to express what is in their souls. \n\n\n\n\nEvent details \n\n\n\nBantu’s Clef \n\n\n\nWednesday 20 May 2026 \n\n\n\nDoors open at 17:00 \n\n\n\nMusic at 17:30 \n\n\n\nUKZN\, Howard College Campus.
