DESCRIPTION:Press release: Dey & Rungan – A preview to the launch of African Breyani1 April 2026 | 17:30 \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music presents award-winning South African vocalist\, songwriter\, and educator Natalie Rungan\, performing music from her latest album\, African Breyani. \n\n\n\nA Durban-born artist with a career spanning over two decades\, Rungan has earned recognition locally and internationally\, including Best Jazz Vocalist at the Old Mutual National Jazz Encounters (2002) and a PhD in Music from Rhodes University in 2023. She has released eight albums and performed across Africa\, Europe\, and the United States. \n\n\n\nAfrican Breyani\, created with Ghanaian pianist and composer Victor Dey Jr.\, blends South and West African jazz influences. The project places African musical traditions at the centre of jazz\, combining rich rhythms\, melody\, and storytelling into a contemporary\, collaborative sound. \n\n\n\nThis live tour offers an intimate preview of the album\, featuring Rungan and Dey alongside Shaun Johannes (bass) and Riley Giandhari (drums). Part of the month-long themed celebration honouring these jazz icons\, Miles and Trane @100 : the impact of Miles Davis and John Coltrane on SA jazz and culture\, CJPM presents the Annual Jazz Vocal Showcase on Wednesday 15th April at 17:30 at the UKZN Centre for Jazz & Popular Music.   \n\n\n\nThe annual celebration of vocal jazz spotlights the repertoires of Miles and Trane as jazz voice lecturer\, Debbie Mari guides the talented singers through iconic songs and improvised solos. The audience can expect some Davis and Coltrane usuals such as Moment’s Notice\, Body and Soul and So What along with other much loved jazz standards\, selections of South African music and a four-part vocal arrangement of the beautiful Naima\, arranged by Scott Gwinnell\,  which promises something for everyone!
