15th Annual Calabash – Press Release

The University of KwaZulu-Natal, School of Arts (Music) is once again proud to present the Annual African Cultural Calabash Festival under the umbrella of the African Music Project, with 2020 marking the 15th festival edition.  Within the framework of COVID restrictions, things have been adjusted to fit the new normal.  So instead of a live concert in the theatre, the acts will be pre-recorded for delayed broadcast and aired on the African Music Project Facebook Page on 27th November at 7:30pm.  This free online family concert is suitable for all ages, and is open to the general public.

The theme for this year’s edition is UBUMBANO – Africa Unite!! The artist line-up includes Glo Mapenzi, a guitarist from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who will have you on your feet dancing at home to the sweet guitar sounds and vocals, calling us all to unite.  Glo is a soulful singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, and his headline piece will be a fusion of South African and Congolese grooves, titled “Africa Unite!”

Kangaroo Zulu Dancers will take your breath away with their amazing indlamu choreographies and acrobatic routines that have taken them to a number of countries, and seen them win countless local Zulu Dance competitions.   HloniphaniArt is a young generation guitarist with amazing guitar riffs performed with such flair, making him an enamored class act locally and internationally.  This new talent is making headlines, and we are excited to have him on this year’s festival line-up.  Red Lights is a vocal acapella ensemble comprised of mainly UKZN students and will present an enchanting set of Afro Gospel with beautiful arrangements and choreography. Finally UKZN African Music and Dance 3rd Year Class will present a set of pieces that synthesize and variety of music and dance styles, including a fusion that demonstrates both our roots as well as modern applications of traditional music.
