Orchestral / Performance

Expert teaching staff to equip young aspiring and talented musicians to pursue a Performance career. The Music staff currently offer training for Performance in piano, flute, recorder, percussion, trumpet, trombone, French horn, violin, ‘cello, clarinet, oboe, guitar, harp,  and voice. With a professional orchestra on our doorstep, the possibilities are endless. There is also a range of diversity within our Performance offerings; e.g. apart from solo performance, pianists can also pursue Piano Accompanying or Chamber Music, singers can explore the vast Lieder repertoire or become part of KwaZulu-Natal’s vibrant opera scene.

For those who hold a BMus in music performance, we offer further studies as part of an MMus.

Orchestral Performance

The Music staff are committed to providing South African Orchestras (and orchestras elsewhere) with dynamic young orchestral musicians. Through arrangements made by the Music staff, students are provided with “on-hand” training and performance experience with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in rehearsals and performances (as paid orchestral cadets). Our examination requirements are aimed at preparing students to participate in orchestral auditions for possible positions within an orchestra.

Instrumental & Vocal Teaching

If you would like to pursue a successful teaching career then a solid performance background will be invaluable. Due to the reduction of music teachers in schools, there has been an urgent demand for quality instrumental and vocal teachers in the region, both in independent music centres which are being developed and in the private studio. The Music Department currently provides teaching courses within its Degree and Diploma offerings to help bridge this need in our province.

Keyboard Studies

Non-pianists who are keen to pursue basic knowledge about functional keyboard like basic scale patterns, fundamental chord formations, how to improve one’s reading at the keyboard, how to provide suitable chords to a basic melody, etc. are taught in our Keyboard Laboratory on a group basis.
