Darius Brubeck is a Honorary Artist at the University of KwaZulu Natal and a Fulbright Senior Specialist. He holds a BA Hons. (cum laude) from Wesleyan University and an MPhil from Nottingham University. In 1983 Brubeck introduced the first Jazz Studies degree in Africa and became the first Director of the Centre for Jazz & Popular Music in 1989 where he served until 2006. He was awarded a Bellagio Project Residency (Rockefeller Foundation) as Composer in 2005 and received 'Outstanding Service to Jazz Education' awards in 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2005 and 2006, when he was elected to the Executive Board of IAJE. He also received an award from Berklee College of Music, Boston for Accomplishment in Contemporary Music.

Creative highlights include ''Commission 2004'' (with Zim Ngqawana) for the inaugural season of Jazz at Lincoln Center and this was performed by Wynton Marsalis, Morgan Freeman and Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra. Two original compositions and many arrangements of Dave Brubeck hits have been featured by the London Symphony Orchestra and Professor Brubeck continues to be very active as a band leader with a number of CDs currently available. The latest, 'For Lydia and the Lion' was launched in London in November, 2008. Recent performances (06-08) include the Darius Brubeck Quartet in England and the US and leading a 'Rolling Reunion' band at the Cape Town International Jazz festivals in 2007 and 2008.

He has taught and given workshops at universities in the UK, USA, Sweden and Turkey, written prefaces for Christopher Ballantine's Marabi Nights and Jurgen Schadeberg's Jazz, Blues and Swingand contributed articles to Jazz Educators Journal, The Cambridge Companion to Jazz, The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz and the UK-based periodical, Jazz Review.
