Bursaries and Scholarships

ARTS & CULTURE TRUST BURSARY

This bursary is awarded to a deserving jazz student at the discretion of the Director of the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music. The amount awarded is variable.

BARBARA AITCHISON VIOLA BURSARY

The Barbara Aitchison Bursary is awarded at the sole discretion of the Academic Co-Ordinators of Music for the benefit of a promising classical viola student who is regarded as a meritorious candidate for such a bursary.

BRUCE HOSKING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A limited amount of funds is available from the National Arts Council. Application forms are available in the music office.

CLASSICAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

This anonymous scholarship is awarded each year to one Western Classical Music undergraduate student. Need and merit is taken into account. Application forms are available in the Music Office.

ELIZABETH ALLEN SCHOLARSHIP FOR MUSIC

This is a post-graduate scholarship exclusively for graduates in Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The scholarship is currently valued at R30 000 for the first year and if required, is renewable for a further year at R20 000. It is for study in the United Kingdom or Europe at an approved institution or with an approved private teacher.

HARP SOCIETY OF SA SCHOLARSHIP

The Harp Society of South Africa Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate BMus student of the harp who has been recommended by the BMus Academic Co-Ordinator. The amount awarded is variable and the closing date for all applications is 31 October of every year.

PAULOS MSIMANGO MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIP

Grants from the Paulos Msimango Scholarship are awarded each year to undergraduate students who are majoring in African Music and Dance. The fund is administered by the African Music Project. Application forms are available in the Music Office.

PHIL HARBER SCHOLARSHIP FOR JAZZ

The Phil Harber Scholarship is awarded to a jazz student (preferably a saxophone player) by the Board of Trustees of the Phil Harber Scholarship. The amount awarded is variable.

RONNIE MADONSELA SCHOLARSHIP FOR JAZZ

Grants from this scholarship are awarded to any needy jazz students. The amounts awarded are variable. Further information can be obtained from the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.

SAMRO

Various bursaries are available from SAMRO and application forms are available in the Music Office

NAC

A limited amount of funds is available from the National Arts Council. Application forms are available in the music office.

NRF GRADUATE AWARDS (Honours, Masters, PhD)

A number of supervisor-linked and other post-graduate scholarships are available. Their availability varies from year to year.  

VIC ELLIS SCHOLARSHIP FOR JAZZ GUITAR

in honour of the memory of the late guitarist, composer Vic Ellis. The scholarship is currently valued at R10 000.
